What does “be on time“ actually mean?

<English version available below>

What does “be on time“ actually mean?

Have you ever wondered how different attitudes to time people have depending on a country? Can you imagine, that there are places, where being 20 mins late for a meeting is ok and nobody is surprised nor angry? Probably it is hard to imagine for most of the Japanese people because in Japan everything starts exactly as scheduled, doesn’t it?

Currently, I’m working at Dream Factory in Tokyo and here every day starts from cleaning the office by all coworkers (btw that was also something that surprised me). It is scheduled exactly at 8:20 a.m. Exactly! It won’t start at 8:17 or 8:23. For Japanese people it’s a standard, but to be honest I was really astonished at the beginning. You may wonder why I make a fuss about such a trivial thing, but in my country it is different. Poles just wouldn’t mind at all if you do that 5 or even 10 mins earlier or later. Why? I guess my country has more flexible time approach comparing to Japan.

The same goes for business meetings. In Poland being 5 minutes late is ok and warning the host about it is not necessary. However, in Japan, it would be a huge faux pas. As I noticed most of the guests, who are visiting our office are coming few minutes before the scheduled time. In Poland, they usually come exactly as scheduled or a few minutes later. Of course, it depends on a person and not everyone is the same, but I guess it is the most common way.

“Being on time” has different meanings depending on a culture. In Mediterranean and Arab countries, being late for an appointment about 20 min is quite normal. In Poland up to 5 mins is also ok. In Japan you have to be exactly on time. And hard to believe, but there are still some communities, that until now didn’t develop the concept of time and the phrase "being late” doesn’t exist in their dictionary. And what about you? Do you have any experience related to the different time approach? 😊
